How to Make a Beautiful DIY Rag Wreath for Any Season

Updated: Oct 22

Fabric strips cut to tie on the wire wreath form to create the fall rag wreath.

Are you looking for an easy, budget-friendly way to add some personality to your home decor? A DIY rag wreath is the perfect project! Whether you want to celebrate a specific holiday, season, or just add a pop of color to your space, this wreath is a great option. Using fabric scraps, a wire frame, and a little creativity, you can craft a wreath that’s one-of-a-kind. In this tutorial, I'll walk you through the simple steps to create your own charming rag wreath in no time.

Materials:

  • Fabric scraps (choose colors based on your theme or season)

  • Wire wreath frame (available at most craft stores or online)

  • Scissors

  • Ribbon (optional, for hanging)

Pro Tip: You can use any fabric you have on hand—old clothes, sheets, or even thrift store finds. The more variety, the more interesting your wreath will look!

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Cut Your Fabric Start by cutting your fabric into strips. Each strip should be around 1 inch wide and 6-8 inches long. The length can vary depending on how full you want your wreath to be. You can mix different patterns, colors, and textures for a more dynamic look.

Step 2: Attach the Fabric to the Frame There are two options for this. One is to take a fabric strip and fold it in half. Place the looped end under one of the wire sections of the wreath frame. Pull the loose ends through the loop and pull tight to secure the strip to the frame. Repeat this process, working your way around the wreath, adding strips as you go. A second option for tying the strips on (see image above) would be to place the strip under two rings of the wreath form, pull up around the rings and tie a knot. I bunched mine together (same color) in groups of three. One on the inner two rings, one on the middle two rings, and one on the outer two rings.

Step 3: Fluff and Adjust Once all the strips are tied to the frame, fluff them up and arrange them to make the wreath look full. You can trim any uneven edges or adjust the fabric to create your desired look. Note: This is a rag wreath, and the edges will have a slightly frayed look.

Step 4: Add a Ribbon (Optional) If you want to add a ribbon for hanging or to decorate the wreath, simply tie a loop around the top wire ring on the back of your wreath frame.

Tips for Customizing Your Rag Wreath:

Customization Ideas:

  • Seasonal Theme: Use bright florals for spring, warm tones for fall, or red and green for a holiday-themed wreath.

  • Personal Touch: Add small embellishments like buttons, charms, or small decorative items to match your home’s style.

  • Color Palettes: Stick to a two or three-tone palette for a clean, modern look or go wild with contrasting colors for a bohemian vibe.

Where to Display Your Rag Wreath:

Once your rag wreath is complete, the possibilities for displaying it are endless! Hang it on your front door to welcome guests, place it above your mantle for a cozy focal point, or use it as a table centerpiece. These are so easy and fun to make. I'm sure you will want to make one for every season to keep the decor fresh throughout the year!

That’s it! In just a few simple steps, you’ve created a gorgeous, personalized rag wreath that will add a touch of handmade charm to your home. This project is perfect for anyone who loves DIY crafts, and the best part is, you can always choose the fabric that best fits your style and home decor.
