Hearts Aplenty: What could be better than a handmade heart for your Valentine?

Updated: Feb 3

Making a fabric heart is a delightful and creative craft project. Here's a simple step-by-step guide to help you create a fabric heart:

Materials Needed:

  • Fabric of your choice

  • Scissors

  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

  • Pins

  • Stuffing material (cotton, polyester filling, etc.)

  • Ribbon or yarn for decoration (optional)

  • Heart pattern

Choose Your Fabric:

  • Select the fabric you'd like for your heart. It could be a solid color, patterned, or even a mix of fabrics for a patchwork effect.

Cut Out Heart Shapes:

  • Fold your fabric in half, ensuring the patterned side is facing outwards.

  • Using chalk or an erasable pen draw a heart shape on the fabric. You can use a template or freehand it. Mine are approximately 5", but you can make yours any size you choose.

  • Cut a 6" square around the heart keeping equal distance all around.

Pin:

  • Place the two square fabric pieces together with the patterned sides facing outwards.

  • Pin or clip together just to hold both pieces of fabric together as you sew.

  • Sew Around the Edges of the Heart:

  • Using a sewing machine or hand-sewing needle, stitch along the edges of the heart, leaving the small opening unstitched for stuffing.

  • Make sure to sew close to the edge, leaving about 1/4 inch seam allowance.

  • Stuff the Heart:

  • Use your chosen stuffing material to fill the heart. Adjust the amount of stuffing to achieve your desired level of plumpness.

  • Close the Opening & Cut:

  • Once the heart is filled, carefully hand-sew or machine-sew the opening shut. Make sure your stitches are secure.

  • Using pinking shears, cut all the way around the heart leaving at least 1/4" margin. This will give your heart a decorative edge.

  • Optional: Decorate with Ribbon or Yarn:

  • If you'd like, you can add a decorative touch by attaching a ribbon or yarn to the top of the heart. Create a loop for hanging or simply tie a bow.

  • Trim any excess threads and ensure all the seams are securely stitched.

Now, you have a charming fabric heart that can be used as a decoration, a gift, or even a lovely addition to a handmade project. Feel free to experiment with different fabrics, sizes, and embellishments to customize your fabric heart.

Enjoy your heart and share with loved ones.
